Reclamation to Production - An End-to-End U.S. Supply Chain

North American Iron and Calumet Reclamation Company, are creating the first fully domestic pig iron supply chain in the United States — reclaiming America’s legacy iron resources and transforming them into high-quality pig iron for U.S. steelmakers.

For more than 140 years, Minnesota’s Iron Range has fueled American industry. Across the Mesabi, Vermilion, and Cuyuna Ranges, billions of tons of iron ore have been mined, leaving behind proven, high-value resources ready for reclamation.

Minnesota Iron Range: Our Generational Resource

Calumet Reclamation Company will recover these legacy iron ore stockpiles. The material is processed through crushing, screening, and heavy-media separation to produce high-quality iron ore concentrate. Once recovery is complete, the land is restored for future community or environmental use.

Reclaiming That Legacy for Modern Use

From Minnesota, the reclaimed ore will move efficiently by existing rail infrastructure to North Dakota. There, North American Iron will use proven, hydrogen-based reduction technology, Tenova HYL, to convert the material into high-purity pig iron — a critical feedstock for U.S. steelmakers.

From Reclamation to Production

The Tenova HYL process, developed through more than six decades of innovation, is recognized as the global standard in direct reduction (DR) technology. It uses hydrogen as the primary reductant, removing oxygen and impurities from iron ore to produce a clean iron product ideal for electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking.

This process will generate up to 96% fewer carbon emissions than imported pig iron while ensuring a secure and consistent supply for domestic steel production.
